Did you know that disposing of products (even toilet paper!) down your toilet can cause significant damage to your sewer line? This is because your sewer line will eventually become so clogged that your piping system will start backing up. You will not want to be at the receiving end of an overflowing toilet once it has had enough easily disposable items!

Here are some items that you should avoid flushing down your toilet:

 • disposable cleaning cloths
 •  wash cloths
 •  diapers
 •  kitty litter
 •  food
 •  hair
 •  trash

If you managed to flush one of these items down your toilet accidentally, it is possible to salvage your sewer line by retrieving it through the drain. This should only be attempted if you know what you’re doing. You can risk possibly pushing the object even further, which will require a quick call to a plumber. If snaking the item doesn’t work or you’ve given up, still call a plumber as soon as possible. Remember, it’s always better to be proactive rather than reactive in these situations, so leave it to the professionals before you have to pay more money for the repairs of an entire plumbing system.

You also don’t want to cause yourself the embarrassment of explaining to your neighbours that you caused the extensive damage that affected them as well. The larger your building, the more complicated the plumbing system is, and the more damages there could be. Be quick in your actions!
