CALGARY - July 28. Calgary is beyond excited to host the 1st Annual Fil-Can Intercity Golf Tournament held over three days and three different golf clubs. The first of its kind, the event tees off thanks to Winnipeg basketball hall of famer Manny Aranez and Calgarian golf afficionado Chris Joaquin.

“This is an opportunity to bring our Filipino community from across Canada together. And building these partnerships through sport is the perfect way to do that,” says Aranez. It’s City vs City; with players across Canada competing in true Ryder Cup Style ― where the lowest player score for each hole wins that hole for their team. May the fores be with you!!

Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg make a western match up that promises a great experience for all. Players tee-off at Heritage Pointe Golf Club July 28, D’Arcy Ranch Golf Club July 29 and Speargrass Golf Club July 30.

Sponsored by FirstService Residential, Manny and Chris’s vision mirror each other in creating a friendly competition. “Our main goal is to build a golf player family with people from around Canada,” says Manny. Chris agrees, adding that, “Golf creates comradery, where all player levels come together to socialize while playing a great sport.”

FirstService Residential Alberta President Glenne Manlig is enthusiastic about sponsoring this inaugural event. “We are thrilled to be the first host and sponsor for the Fil-Can Intercity Golf Tournament, connecting and supporting the Filipino community across Canada.  Part of our Golf With Purpose initiative supporting men’s mental health, I’m ecstatic and honoured to partner with Manny and Chris through Fil-Can,” says Manlig.

Fil-Can Commissioner Manny Aranez served many years as head of Team Winnipeg and Commissioner of the Filipino Basketball Association. A member of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame, Manny has been involved in the North American Basketball community for decades. But he still makes time to golf on a regular basis.

Fil-Can Commissioner Chris Joaquin has golfed since 1997, playing at the junior and collegiate level. In Calgary and Winnipeg Chris has quickly become a respected player on the golf scene, and a true example of what a great experience it is to play the game.
