On Friday, June 16, 2017, associates at FirstService Residential joined offices all over the world by participating in “Daylight Hour.” The global initiative encouraged offices to turn off their lights in day-lit spaces from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. to raise awareness about using natural daylight in lieu of electric lighting, reinforcing that such a simple act can play an important role in reducing our environmental footprint.

“At FirstService Residential we are committed to sustainability, energy conservation and reducing our carbon footprint. As part of this commitment, we continue to establish green practices and conservation efforts in the communities we serve,” said Chris Normandeau, director of FS Energy, a subsidiary of FirstService Residential. “Participating in Daylight Hour is a fun, engaging way to remind our associates, and the communities we manage, of the availability of daylight and encourage more sustainable practices.”

This marks the third year that FirstService Residential takes part in Daylight Hour, which is spearheaded by the Building Energy Exchange, a resource center dedicated to advancing efficient energy and lighting designs in buildings. According to the Building Energy Exchange, many office spaces near exterior walls receive enough daylight to work by, yet lights are often left on. In fact, the hours when daylight is most available, typically workday afternoons, coincide with peak demand – when businesses demand the most energy from the grid. This is important to note because not only is peak energy more expensive, but oftentimes it is the most harmful since the oldest and least efficient plants have to come online to meet the demand.

Though a simple campaign in nature, FirstService Residential’s participation in Daylight Hour will also serve to educate the communities they manage about this important issue and demonstrate FirstService Residential’s commitment to implementing cost-effective measures that impact climate change.
