FirstService Residential Hosts Legislative Kick-Off Events to Prepare for Day at the Capitol

Homeowners association board members throughout Nevada are gearing up to visit the Capitol building in Carson City as part of FirstService Residential’s "Day at the Capitol” on Tuesday, March 28, 2017. This is the second time that FirstService Residential
, Las Vegas’ leading association management company, has organized the event enabling board members across Nevada to visit the Capitol and speak directly with their local representatives.
In preparation for Day at the Capitol, FirstService Residential launched a campaign that included legislative kick-off events for Southern and Northern Nevada HOA board members. Guest speakers at the Las Vegas
event included John Leach, Esq
. and Donna Zanetti, Esq. of Leach Johnson Song & Gruchow. Gayle Kern, Esq. of Kern and Associates, Ltd. and Norman Rosensteel of Nevada Association Services, served as guest speakers at the Reno event. During the kick-off events, board members learned how potential legislative changes could affect Nevada housing communities, and why getting involved in the legislative process was so important. “The list of Bill Draft Requests (BDRs) will swell over the next 30-60 days, as the newly elected officials come on board and get their arms around issues that they want to address,” said John Leach, Esq. “This is why it is important for board members to be at the forefront, talking to lawmakers, and providing them with data and solutions for their common interest communities. Let’s be actors rather than wait to be acted upon.”
Nevada legislators meet every two years in Carson City, the state’s capitol. The 79th (2017) Session
will begin on Monday, February 6, 2017 when BDRs are reviewed and laws enacted. The Day at the Capitol event was created exclusively by FirstService Residential as a way to get board members educated and involved with legislative changes that may affect their communities. The company will also host several meetings leading up to the day to help board members formulate agendas and detailed talking points to help ensure they effectively represent what’s in the best interest of their communities.
“Many times during these legislative sessions, lawmakers only hear from the small minority who are dissatisfied with regulations pertaining to homeowners associations. The intent with Day at the Capitol is to provide an opportunity for board members to express their concerns,” said Steven Parker, president of FirstService Residential in Nevada. “It is important for them to know that they can make a difference when their voices are heard, and that they are an important part of the legislative process – this is most effective way to elicit change in their community.”
During the Day at the Capitol, board members will tour the Capitol grounds, attend hearing sessions, meet with legislators to voice concerns and most importantly, have the opportunity to advocate for their communities.
